I do not write for a select minority, which I do not care much, nor for this platonic entity so adored that we nickname the Mace. I do not believe in either of these two abstractions, dear to the demagogue. I write for me, for my friends and to attenuate the passage of time . No doubt Borges considered the readers of the Pleiade as unknown friends: he was happy to consider the prospect of entering this Library. Not content with authorizing this edition, he took part in its development until the very end of his life: he guided the translation and annotation work, generously delivering his reflections on his work, and indicating which forgotten texts he accepted to be exhumed for the occasion.
